TMJ Dentist in Humble

When Pleasant (“Plez”) Humble put down roots in the area in the 1800s, little did he know a namesake town would eventually grow and flourish from modest beginnings. Once an oil boomtown in the early 20th century, Humble, a thriving community of around 16,000 residents, has most everything you need conveniently close to home, including specialized medical and dental care.

Dr. Katherine S. Phillips specializes in treating sleep apnea and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders (TMD), helping patients in Humble and beyond find relief from jaw pain, headaches, snoring, and other TMD and OSA symptoms.

Have You Been Experiencing Jaw Pain?

From a nagging ache to searing pain, many things are linked to jaw discomfort, including injury to the jaw or the head and neck muscles. Grinding or clenching your teeth which puts pressure on the TMJ can also cause chronic jaw pain and may lead to TMD, as well as stress where you tighten facial and jaw muscles or clench your teeth often without realizing it.

How Do You Know If You Have TMD?

TMD symptoms are often confused with those of other conditions, making TMJ disorders difficult to diagnose and properly treat. An expert such as Dr. Katherine Phillips not only offers relief, but peace of mind knowing you are receiving the most appropriate care for your TMD.
TMD symptoms include, but are not limited to:

Jaw aches and pain. These unpleasant sensations can be constant or intermittent, severe or mild.

Facial pain. When your primary jaw muscle, the masseter, is sore, it can feel like general facial pain in the cheeks as well as around your jaw and the TMJ.

Locking, popping and clicking of the jaw joint. With severe TMD, your jaw can get stuck, or locked, in an open or closed position.

Frequent headaches. One way to determine if it’s a tension headache or not is that typical headache treatments don’t provide pain relief from TMD-related headaches.

Aching ear pain. Pain caused by TMD is typically felt in front of or below the ear. It can range from a dull ache to sharp and burning, or a sensation of ear “fullness.”

How We Treat TMJ Disorders

At Restore TMJ and Sleep therapy, Dr. Katherine Phillips uses state-of-the-art 3D imaging to see all the elements of your teeth and jaw joints to uncover the root cause of your symptoms.

Using a holistic approach, treatment can include over-the-counter or prescription medications, such as anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants, and jaw exercises and physical therapy. Additionally, alternating heat and cold treatment may be to reduce TMJ pain and inflammation.

When these treatments don’t provide adequate relief, you might have an underlying issue in your temporomandibular joint that needs to be addressed. Dr. Phillips routinely uses dental splint therapy, also called occlusal splints, such as a specially designed mouthguards created specifically for the treatment of TMD. This therapy addresses the underlying cause of TMD, not just symptom relief.

Customized bite orthotics. Dr. Phillips designs orthotics to provide TMJ comfort, improve motion and stability, and reduce unnecessary TMJ strain.
